Good Day my fellow Virgin Islanders, this is Senator Sammuel “Sammy” Sanes, your Democratic Candidate for Lieutenant Governor, speaking to you on the behalf of the Petrus/Sanes team. This week I am presenting another part of our weekly radio discussions around the issues that matter to Virgin Islanders.
Some of you may have received my Email a little over a week ago, that was sent out on the topic of the Insurance Companies here in the Virgin Islands, but for those who did not, this the topic of my discussion with you today.
When it comes to Insurance, many Virgin Islanders already know that the office of the Lieutenant Governor is responsible to serve and protect the interest of the public by enforcing the insurance laws of the territory and by assisting the insurance industry to better serve our public, especially now as we continue to deal with after effects of the two devastating hurricanes that struck our beautiful islands.
For Virgin Islanders, your homeowner’s insurance policy protects far more than just your home.
While a standard homeowners policy helps provide protection for your house, its coverage typically extends to more than the physical structure of your home.
From your personal belongings, to the shed in your backyard. or even medical bills, if a guest is injured on your property, a homeowner’s insurance policy may include coverage for your dwelling.
If your home and attached structures, like a deck or garage, are damaged by a covered peril, dwelling coverage may help pay for repairs.
The other structures coverage in your policy may help pay for repairs, or replacement for detached structures on your property, like a fence, or a shed, if they are damaged, or destroyed by a covered peril.
When it comes to personal property – Your personal property coverage may help pay to replace certain belongings, including furniture and electronics, that are stolen or damaged by a covered loss.
When it comes to you and your family – If you, or a family member, are found legally responsible for accidentally damaging someone else’s property, or injuring someone, liability coverage may help pay for related repair costs, legal fees, and medical bills.
If a visitor is accidentally injured at your home, your policy’s guest medical protection may help pay for their resulting medical bills.
If you cannot stay in your home after a fire, or other covered claim, your homeowner’s insurance coverage may help pay for temporary increased living costs, such as hotel bills.
Since the passing of the two category five hurricanes over our islands, the term Underinsured has surfaced throughout the entire territory.
The definition of Underinsured, as per Business Dictionary.com, is a term given to those who do not possess the proper level of insurance coverage against a particular form of personal loss, that includes auto, home, or healthcare.
Underinsured is generally associated with the policyholder’s failure to coinsure no less than 80% of the property’s value.
The public shouldn’t have to wait until the passing of two category five hurricanes to be warned of the risks of being underinsured.
We are living in a physical location that is subjected to hurricanes and other natural disasters. Information, as well as workshops, should be offered all year round to keep the people informed of their insurance status.
Under a Petrus/Sanes Administration we WILL NOT allow our people to be taken advantage by Insurance Companies, who all of a sudden decide to try changing the rules and the terms of coverage, when it comes to the protection of our people.
Allie Petrus and I will make a concerted effort to not only encourage Virgin Islanders to make sure that they have the proper level of insurance coverage.
But we will also fight to make sure every Virgin Islander receives what they are due in order to help rebuild their lives when catastrophes like the ones we experienced hit our islands.
The Petrus/Sanes Team is the right team to look out for our people – and that is exactly what we will do
Until Next week, same place and same time, believe…We Will Turn Our Islands around for All of Us!!!
All In, All In, With Petrus/Sanes.
